Good on ya. I tried Mandarin at about 20--the radicals are nearly the same as Japanese, which helped a lot because Japan basically borrowed and repurposed the Chinese system--but the tonals of Chinese were tough for me to understand. Similarly, one "related" language from one of the language families (Spanish/French/Italian as "Romance languages," meaning "Rome-influenced/descended from Latin," is an easier transition. Good luck with whatever you choose.
