Doesn’t work out well for everyone. I became weak, and lost far too much weight, while sticking to a vegan diet. All the best to those who adhere to the lifestyle, it just was not for me.
I recently read a news article about a vegan who died of starvation because of her diet. The vegan diet is not designed to furnish what the human body needs.
Veganism works initially because it tends to remove processed food from the diet. The really dangerous crap that is killing us.
So I suspect there is a honeymoon phase where the strictness of veganism helps those addicted to western diets with all the sugar and carbs. But once that is done it doesn't sustain the body well.
Veganism in no way restricts sugar and carbs. Sugar, corn, soy, rice, all widely available highly processed. You could live entirely on Froot Loops and soy milk and still be vegan.
I get that. I should have clarified the initial phase probably involves reading labels and generally paying attention rather than eating like a zombie. I think the initial stages can be cleaner than a standard American diet.
I do agree it is not that healthy, especially if you bulk up with stodge.
I think giving your body a biofuel change periodically is good. Wheat is good. But we have all eaten far too much of it in our lives, for example. Go off it every once in awhile.
My vegan diet experience was a last ditch attempt to thwart a worsening of arthritis that has eventually led to my not being able to work. I tried vegetarian, vegan, the carnivore diet, acupuncture, grounding sheets for my bed. And of course handfuls of powerful painkillers for years and years, till my numbed body, still experiencing the wear and tear, eventually said no. Enough. Retired from my self employed decorating job. There was nothing..Angecil about my decision. Desperation. Yes. Even if any diet had worked, I would not advise or pressure anyone to follow my lead. I don’t know enough about nutrition. And we are all, thank God, individuals. One size most definitely does not fit all.
The ones who take B12 & EPA/DHA supplements do fine. The problem is the fanatics who do themselves in by refusing all animal byproducts even when they are clearly essential. The myelin sheathing in your brain requires B12.

A “raw food” vegan diet probably works as you describe, as it would eliminate processed foods and all grains. Paleo without the meat.

That certainly has a long tradition as part of some Indian religious practices, and of course all dogma-based religions are cults.

Joaquin Phoenix and his siblings grew up in the horrid “Children of God” cult. I read an extensive piece about the cult and the experience the Phoenix family endured therein. This was probably back in 2000 or maybe 1999. I was a young mother and reading it horrified me.
A while ago, I tried to find the same piece (it was very long) and it seems to have been scrubbed. There is still information out there, but it is quite watered down. And to be clear, it was Joaquin’s parents who subjected their children to that Hell for YEARS. They alone are responsible for any issues that plague their kids as adults.

I will. I have searched extensively. I’ve found numerous articles verifying that these children grew up in the cult, etc., but all the details and everything are missing.

Jones was a genius-level con man who knew exactly how to grab white liberals by the balls and how to expertly manipulate them: he surrounded himself with poor black people, claimed to be speaking for them as their champion and protector, peppered every speech with rants about the evils of American racism, and when attacked turned the tables and accused his opponent of being a right-wing bigot (possibly working for the FBI) who was standing in the way of liberation for the poor and oppressed.
This works like a charm every time, and that goes double for California!

My new hobby: on this wonderful platform, I have found myself on occasion fighting a monotonous moment, say, in a grocery lineup, by triggering leftoids. Its quite simple to do that, of course. It takes only a word, like a tiny falling snowflake, to damage another, well, snowflake.
But it has a practical application: i learn what vitriol to expect, see the nature of the Big Lie up close, and formulate word sequences that try not to trigger but to teach.

Heaven's Gate has always had a special place in my heart as far as cults go. Their story was one of many, valuable stories that smacked me upside the head and made me realize transgenderism is a giant cult. (At least Heaven's Gate had a website when it was still rare. What does the trans cult have? A flag that looks like stale toothpaste. )

Ecumenical Institute was an obscure cult for intellectuals in the '70s. It used Teilhard's theology to recruit Jesuit-style international missionaries. I think it was a CIA front but can't prove it.
