That tweet about Walz and Harris as dad and aunt is insane….

It’s obvious a lot of people look to political figures as proxies for their own absent or bad parents. Most have the sense not to admit that directly.

This guy went even further and added a bunch of deranged fan fiction on top of it all. Remarkable.

The left’s entire world view is fan fiction, but it results in a horror story for everyone.

We have to be careful to generalize all people who identify as left, right or centre as all being the same. Many do fall into left and right tribes and sound like NPCs or robots (especially online). But there are conservatives who love the environment and liberals who are against large deficits. It may seem like there are less than the past, but they are not vocal online or screaming in public like the extremists.

Regarding cults: encountered many in multiple countries but since my cult only has room for one I am a waste of time trying to convert. Sadly fallen for a few very minor scams though so I am far from perfect.

Kevan you make a good point.

Truly identifying as "left", "right", or "centre"; and not just using it as a shorthand in a good and well-understood context, is the biggest part of the problem.

Expand full comment

The left doesn't "love the environment"; they use (mostly false) claims about it to pursue power.

You have it around backwards again. No wonder you 're demoralized, you keep blaming on democrats what Republi are doing. All that. Cognitive dissonance really wears a pers

That tweet alarmed me, too. I’m English, living in England, and I wonder if enough Americans think like this tweeter to sway the November elections? I hope not, and it’s hard to believe there is that much utter stupidity in the world. Anyway, the photo of all those people lying down in the street, but making sure to keep tight hold of their backpacks made me laugh. And the face masks on the morons! So, I suppose there really is a great deal of stupidity stumbling around the world looking for a cult to join.

Yes, literally and dangerously insane.

Most Democrats are like that these days.

I grew up just a few blocks from the People's Temple here in SF, and walked past it almost every day on my way to baseball practice (only church I've ever seen w/guards stationed out front). We didn't know it at the time, but a few of our friends, including almost one whole team, were members, & eventually perished at Jonestown. Yes, they were all black. Not surprisingly, one of the members of our COVID freedom cell here was a survivor. She worked hard to fight against the lockdowns, but eventually moved to a free state, away from this crazy cult land. Who could blame her.

She has a crazy story! I just reached out to her last week…

The original English Calvinist Puritans were a cult, who were the literal and spiritual ancestors of all the pseudo religious political cults of Yankee America in the 19th century, who inflicted their fanaticism on the South, then the world, through the 19th and 20th centuries. Most batshit insane "isms" of the last two centuries can be traced to the original cult of Calvin.

Seems more like all batshit insane cults throughout history can be traced back to the Levant.

Heaven's Gate has some trans overlap, too. Everyone was encouraged to change their names, be androgynous and pretend to be sexless, Marshall Applewhite had himself castrated by the other members, etc.

Funny timing. In that weird week following the Trump-Biden debate, when you could see The Narrative twisting around 180 degrees in real time, I started using "The Cult" as my go-to label for... well... you know. The ideology that has swallowed the Democratic Party, the media, the academy, and the NGO complex. When I speak to my friends and family about their factual beliefs and their political decisions, I simply refer to their cult, and their cult leaders, and the current shape of the Narrative they have been ordered to believe by their cult leaders. The cult that tells them that anyone who disagrees with the cult is not just wrong or misguided but is the embodiment of evil, a literal Nazi, a paid agent of Vladimir Putin, perhaps not even a person at all but a Russian Bot, and that all cult members must cut off social contact with such monsters, including their own friends and family members. The cult that says that this includes anyone who talks about X (Biden is senile, Ukraine is full of Nazis), until the day the cult leaders declare (e.g., on the front page of the New York Times) that of course X is true and we've always known this, please try to keep up. The cult that denies basic scientific facts (e.g., biological sex, IQ and cognitive performance) and replaces them with an incoherent paranoid fantasy in which the Outsiders are responsible for inventing these lies.

Anyway, I'm about a month away from hiring a deprogrammer to work on my elderly parents. Anyone have a referral?

EDIT: It should be noted that the cult identified above is far from the only cult in the world. There’s certainly a Trump cult that believes all sorts of nonsense, including QANON-type gibberish. But remember also that one of the favorite moves of a cult leader is to declare that anyone who points out that the cult is a cult is to declare that no, it’s the Outsiders who are in a cult, we’re the ones who are correct and sane and on the right side of history. Just because some of your political enemies are in a cult doesn’t mean you’re not in a cult. This appears to be an almost impossible message for people to grasp.

I agree! It’s things like: coercing you to endorse things that you know to be untrue, intentionally alienating you from any relationships with people outside the cult, telling you that you’re worthless and can only be redeemed by following the teachings of the cult, etc.

Yes. The intentional breaking down of a person’s sense of self is what prepares them for indoctrination. Also known as “becoming aware of your privilege and your complicity in the oppression of marginalized communities”.

I grew up in a fundamentalist Christian group that was pretty cultish with its own lingo, rules, etc. Turned liberal in my 30s as a kind of rebellion. The past few years I noticed a lot of the stuff I was reading/hearing from the Left was religious in nature. The “believe XYZ or *else*” vibes really triggered a little uh-oh bell in my head. It was all downhill from there.

Very nice. I watch documentaries about cults. These are spot on. There's another one that started out trying to match people to their soul mate, but when there weren't enough men joining, they ordered and convinced lots of women they were trans and coerced them into surgeries. Criminal.

Excellent insights. I've just watched "Yuri Bemenov (Sr.) on Psychological Warfare" on YouTube (Joey Vantes is the name of the channel - there is another excellent 1983 presentation on the GBPPPR2 YouTube channel). I highly recommend it! We need to understand the depth of subversion that surrounds us, and how our culture and media propagate it.

(I didn't post the links here because they are not always accepted - just search using the titles and channels)
