First I must apologize, for by now, ‘love’ may be considered a term of hate speech. It seems that in a world of enforced equality, there is little room for love, or any strong motivation. Excellence has been ruled out before hand, growth is narrowly constrained.

A better term for ‘equity’ (equality of outcomes) is entropy, or heat death, the dispersal of all energy, after which nothing can happen, and there is nothing left to care.

Love if not directed to Big Brother, is treason, not hate speech.

Morning Tovarisch! Your choices are excellent fictional commentary on the present human condition. I would like to hear your thoughts on the best documentary. My choice: Idiocracy.

Expand full comment

The first 5 minutes of Idiocracy are legendary, but the rest of the movie doesn't come close to the quality of those mentioned in this post. Ironically the left thinks that people who disagree with them are the Idiocracy ;)

Guilty as charged. You must admit Tovarisch, that the dialog concerning plants needing water (you mean like outta da toilet?) is inspired.

3 all time greats!

"Human beings are born with different capacities. If they are free, they are not equal. And if they are equal, they are not free.". ― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

But, I'd add the BladeRunner quadrilogy.

Nice. I don't like hope, so I won't say hope. Hope is so, passive and it conveys and encourages the weakness of dependence and the forfeiture of agency. Remember Obama?

At any rate we can take inspiration and courage knowing that 2081 is thousands of years old. For we could add the myth of Procrustes to this list. Somehow that warning, no doubt based on past totalitarian, "equality and equity", regimes was heeded and we fulfilled a brighter vision in 19th century America. It can be done again. Death to the do-gooders!

Why once?

We’re living in a upside down world. I’m just trying my best to navigate my way through this dystopian nightmare 🤦🏻‍♂️

Political savagery, tribal warfare in effect, really isn’t dystopian. Consider, it’s the war before dystopia may set in. If it is lost to the left, and globalists, and Marxists.

Let’s win the war instead.

This is where we are. Black mirror. I was telling a shady person who was a Karen this earlier this year.

I’ve only seen Gattaca, but I bought it so I’ve seen it several times. Vincent is placing himself, with his physical risks, as a weak link in the likely success of the mission as well as the safety of the crew.

The question I suspect was meant to be raised, what did genetic engineering overlook, if the engineered are without the drive or stability Vincent displays?

Expand full comment

The genetic engineers overlooked their own hubris. And the people in power put too much faith in "the science," because it gave them power. The people allowed it all to happen because they put their faith in experts.

This was before I discovered Substack, but this is brilliant! Kurt Vonnegut lives!

The funny thing about Gattaca is that's a world we'll never get if the Left has its way. They can't make everyone better, so they'll make most everyone worse. The equity police will saw your legs off, not give a cripple better legs. And they can't bear the idea that some people are born better. If you're better at something, it's because you oppressed someone and need to atone for your sin.

The ending of Nosedive is wonderful and pretty much how I have been on social media forever. Completely irrelevant and without fear because it doesn't matter... Or does it?

While not SciFi, have you seen the film The Rules of the Game? It's a 1939 French film which satirizes the Euro Elites on the dawn of the war.

In the current era another Andrew Niccol movie that would be the Gattaca companion piece is "In Time". Nowhere near the other in quality, but worth an honourable mention. Time = Life. Breadlines replaced by time transfusions from a street preacher. If you replace those characters with real life oligarchs who want to live forever it has a disturbing prescience.
