I absolutely loathe reality shows, but I did watch "River Monsters" because it was a merging of the old redneck fishing shows like Jimmy Houston's with Attenborough's nature documentaries, so it was like catnip to me.

They really should have used Primus as the soundtrack. Les Claypool likes to fish too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPGIRhEDaDY&ab_channel=chadro85

That is such an underrated song.

I have watched “River Monsters” and thought it was a fantastic show if for nothing else the locales and the story of the fish.

I could not get into “Naked and Afraid” as I would never consider doing it myself because I would likely not survive the bugs! Seriously, I’m allergic to most things that sting! I get welts from mosquitoes 🫤 So, be naked with bugs abounding? Not unless the prize was $5M.

How To Catch a River Monster

I always prefer a Hand Grenade lure! :-)

Here is one thing I never understood about naked and afraid. Can’t you just bring a fire starter, set fire to the relevant forest or savannah, and with a sharpened stick stab every animal that runs out on fire to death and then smoke it and eat it? Respect to the competitors, but I’ve always wondered this.

Great strategy, but I doubt the producers would allow for wisespread destruction of a natural area. The contestants might get burnt too.

Let me also suggest two other rather absorbing reality shows. I am addicted to ‘Forged in Fire’. It’s on 24/7 now and I cannot get enough of men (mostly men) turning random steel bits into bladed weapons. When Doug Marcaida tests the blades on animal carcasses and ballistic dummies declaring, “It will kill” that’s the highest honor a bladesmith can receive.

The other is ‘Alone’. Ten people turned out in some frigid, gray wilderness, miles from each other with just a few tools, and left there to figure out how to survive. The person who lasts the longest wins. Most cannot handle the total solitude for very long. Interesting show.

2 of my favorites! I miss them both. ...No longer have cable. There's a few History channel shows on secondary antenna TV channels, but not those.

Download Kodi and read up a little on how to get those shows you miss 😉

River Monsters with my 10 year old son was a ritual. Because Jeremy sought out freaky fish. Plus some crocs.
