Comrades:

is a living legend.

In 1989, Fengsuo was one of the student leaders at Tiananmen Square. He started and ran “The Voice of Students” radio station as a dissident pro-democracy communications hub. In the aftermath of the crackdown, he was one of the most wanted “criminals” and imprisoned for a year.

Few men on this planet are as brave or have sacrificed as much as Fengsuo. I am in awe of how humble and steadfast he remains. In our conversation, we discuss:

  • How he first awoke to the injustices of the CCP

  • How he organized one of the first elections in Chinese history at his university

  • What inspired him and 100 million other Chinese people to rally together in 1989

  • His most visceral memories from June 4, 1989 and its aftermath

  • How we can support freedom in China and around the world

  • What gives him hope

Fengsuo is President of the Human Rights in China organization and I highly recommend his Substack:

Fengsuo commemorates his fellow dissidents who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Liu Xiaobo: The third person in history to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize while imprisoned. Died of liver failure shortly after being released from prison at the age of 61.

Li Wangyang: Served 21 years in prison on charges of counterrevolutionary propaganda, incitement, and subversion - the longest sentence of any Tiananmen Square activist. “Committed suicide” shortly after his release.

Bian Hanwu: Executed for attacking a train that had rammed peaceful demonstrators.
